MUSEUM OF GRAF IGNATIEVO AIR FORCE BASE

The museum was establishedin 1965 as " a room of soldier's glory". In 1970 the museum collection was exhibited in the halls of the present-day building and since then has a statute of a museum.

In 2003 the museum building was renovated, the picture collection was expanded and new items were added to the museum collection.

The museum collection is divided into ten basic themes, which depict the foundation and growth of the unit. The museum has also a copious outdoor exposition where most of the legendary Bulgarian Air Force airplanes could be seen - these are Yak -23, MIG-15, MIG-17, MIG-19C, MIG-19P, MIG-21PF, MIG-23BN, L-29, AN-2.

The first museum theme is "The First Steps of Bulgarian Aviation" and it comprises basic facts about the period 1892-1912.

The second theme is named 'The Beginning' and it views the foundation of Graf Ignatievo airport and the Second Attack Army Regiment.

The nascence and development of Bulgarian jet aviation is rendered in "Graf Ignatievo - Cradle of Bulgaria's Jet Age" theme.

The mastering of new aircraft handed over during the years is mirrored in "Battle Stations Forever" theme.

"Aircraft and a person rest with a victory smile" theme elaborates the staff activities in spheres of sports, arts and socializing.

The theme " Faster, Higher and Forward to the Future" reflects the newest facts concerning the growth of the Unit - transformation of 19-th Fighter Air Regiment into the 3-rd Air Force Base, renovation and modernization of the airport and installation of the new communication equipment.

The theme "School for Professionals" reflects the participation of the 3-rd Air Base in international exercises.

The most valuable items are placed in a huge window display - a container with propaganda leaflets which in 1956 were in a balloon shot down by Cpt Trifonof; and the personal flight suit and helmet which belonged to the first Commander of the Unit General Simeon Simeonov.

Some pictures and personal belongings of pilots who died while performing their duties are arranged in the center of the window display. Other personal items, old aircraft parts and devices as well as numerous souvenirs and presents are exhibited.

You can take a virtual tour round the museum halls and our outdoors exposition, and also have a look at the multi-dimensional pictures.
